After hearing a plea, the Supreme Court asked the National Commission for Minorities to draw the definition of minority and lay down guidelines for classifying minorities at state-level, in 3 months. CJI Ranjan Gogoi was listening to the plea by BJP leader and advocate Ashwani Kumar Upadhyay who moved to the court in 2017 asking minority status for Hindus in 7 states and 1 UT, where the community faced a downfall.
