As Democrats hardened their stance against former US President Donald Trump during the impeachment trial, the lawyers defending Trump said the impeachment was fuelled by the hatred of Democrats against the former President. “This is ordinarily political rhetoric that is virtually indistinguishable from the language that has been used by people across the political spectrum for hundreds of years,” said lawyer Michael van der Veen.
