Dominic Thiem beat Roger Federer 3-6, 7-6(11), 6-4 in a thrilling clash to end the Swiss veteran’s clay season comeback despite racing into a 4-1 lead inside 15 minutes and reached the Madrid Open semi-finals. The 5th-seeded Austrian, who saved 2 match points, will now play Novak Djokovic after the world no.1’s opponent Marin Cilic withdrew with food poisoning. This was Federer’s first clay tournament in 3 years.
