Federer returns to clay with win in Madrid

Roger Federer had to shake off a brief pre-match jitter on his clay return after a three-year absence, winning 6-2, 6-3 against Richard Gasquet at the Madrid Open. The 20-time Grand Slam champion took only 52 minutes to topple Gasquet in the second round. Federer skipped the clay events for two full seasons to focus on his grass court form, winning Wimbledon in 2017. He won the Madrid title in 2006, 2009, and 2012.
