India competed in their first Olympic games at the 1900 Paris Games. Coming into the 2021 Olympics, the Indians had a total of 28 medals in the quadrennial event. The Dhyan Chand-led team win India's first-ever gold in 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. Indian men's hockey team then won in 1948, 1952, 1956, 1964, and 1980. Abhinav Bindra won a first-ever gold medal in an individual event in 2008. Neeraj won India its first-ever gold medal in athletics.
