Joe Root’s 226 marked his sensational return to form as England were handed a boost in the second Test against New Zealand as they ended day four confident enough to square the series. It took a five-wicket haul for Neil Wagner to bring an end to England’s first innings at 476, the lead being 101. At stumps, New Zealand remained 96 for two and need to bat the final day although rain may spoil the party yet again.
