Eighth seed Serena Williams beat old foe Maria Sharapova 6-1 6-1 in their 59-minute high-octane first-round encounter at the US Open. Williams, returning to the US Open after last year’s controversial final in which her heated conversation with the chair umpire overshadowed Naomi Osaka’s maiden Grand Slam win, used her trademark power tennis to thrash Sharapova in the first New York meeting between two stars.
