Scientists have discovered the 8th known persistent lava lake in the world. It’s seethed inside the active volcano Mount Michael which sits atop remote Saunders Island in the sub-Antarctic South Sandwich Islands. The lake is buried at the southernmost part of South Atlantic. Volcanic activity at Mount Michael has been documented for almost 200 years. The molten lava temperatures here can reach as high as 1,279 °C.
