Researchers at Pompeii, the city buried under a thick carpet of volcanic ash, have found huge mounds of refuse stored outside the city walls and it might have been staging grounds for cycles of use and reuse. The rubbish was piled up along almost the whole external wall on the city’s northern side, among other sites. Some of the mounds included ceramic and plaster, which might be repurposed as construction materials.
