FIFA has shelved a proposed expansion of the 2022 Qatar World Cup to 48 teams, dealing a big blow to the world football body’s president Gianni Infantino. The 2022 showpiece event in the Gulf state will now be played with 32 nations. FIFA dropped the plan despite the initial recommendation of the number of teams should be increased to 48 for the World Cup, ahead of 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
