Dhawan was subsequently recruited into the Delhi Under-19 squad for the Cooch Behar Trophy in October 2001, at the age of 15. Before the 2013 Champions League Twenty20 tournament, Dhawan was named captain of the Sunrisers Hyderabad squad. In the 2014 Indian Premier League, he was replaced as captain by Darren Sammy. The 2015 Indian Premier League season was a disaster for both Dhawan and the Sunrisers.

They, on the other hand, came back to win the tournament in 2016. Sunrisers Hyderabad signed Dhawan for the 2017 Indian Premier League. Dhawan was purchased in the 2018 IPL Auction by Sunrisers Hyderabad using their RTM (right to match) card for 5.2 crores. Dhawan was traded to the Delhi Capitals again for the 2019 season, where he currently plays.

ODI Playing Career

Dhawan was named to his first international team in October 2010 for a three-match One-Day International series against Australia. On October 20, Dhawan made his international debut in the second One-Day International (ODI) at Visakhapatnam. Dhawan's debut was a disaster as he was bowled off the second ball by Clint McKay. Dhawan's ODI career did not begin until his second series, which was against the West Indies.

Dhawan began opening the Indian innings with Rohit Sharma in the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, and the risk paid off handsomely. After Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar, Dhawan's opening partnership with Rohit Sharma is India's second most effective opening partnership.

T-20 International Career

On June 4, 2011, Dhawan made his T20I debut against the West Indies in Port of Spain. He batted first and was out for an 11-ball 5. However, in terms of T20 cricket, Dhawan has come a long way. Dhawan scored the most runs in T20Is in 2018 of any cricketers. He scored 689 runs in the calendar year and was also named Cricbuzz's ODI and T20 Team of the Year 2018.

Test Career

Dhawan was named to India's Test squad for the four-match series against Australia in February 2013. Dhawan replaced Sehwag in the third Test, which was held in Mohali on March 14. Dhawan's century was the fastest by any batsman on his Test debut. He completed the task in just 85 balls. Dhawan was eventually ejected for 187. Dhawan did not bat in India's second innings due to a hand injury sustained while fielding on the fourth day. The injury was later determined to be a fracture in his left side, preventing him from playing in the fourth Test in Delhi and keeping him out for six weeks.
