As Varanasi struggles with a fresh surge in Covid-19 cases amid the second wave, a multidisciplinary research unit at Banaras Hindu University and CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology has found after a joint genome sequencing study that seven major variants of the disease were responsible for the fresh outbreak. The panel found that the most predominant variant that led to the surge was B.1.617.
