Researchers have revealed Pūhāhonu in Hawaii is the world's largest shield volcano, revising past records that claimed nearby Mauna Loa was the largest. After a series of new measurements, including a chemical analysis of underwater rocks and a thorough survey of the ocean floor, scientists concluded how large Pūhāhonu is. The undersea volcano is twice the size of Mauna Loa, measuring 171 miles long & 56 miles wide.
