At least 22 people are dead and more than 1,000 injured in a massive earthquake in eastern Turkey. The 6.8 magnitude quake, centered on Sivrice town in Elazig province, resulted in buildings collapsing and sending residents rushing into the street. Tremors can also be felt in neighbouring Syria, Lebanon, and Iran. In 1999 about 17,000 people had died in a massive earthquake in the western city of Izmit in Iran.
