A record number of 361 elephants died in Sri Lanka in 2019. It’s the highest number of elephant deaths since Sri Lanka became independent in 1948. There are an estimated 7,500 wild elephants in Sri Lanka now. It’s illegal to kill them, but the animals often come into conflict with rural communities. Most of these 361 elephants were killed by people using electric fences, poison and explosives concealed as food.
