He rose to fame by playing Ross Geller in the sitcom Friends, for which he was nominated in 1995 for an Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series Primetime Emmy Award and won a Screen Actors Guild Award. His first major motion picture role was in The Pallbearer (1996) while he was still performing in Friends. This was followed by parts in Kissing a Fool, Six Days, Seven Nights, Apt Pupil (all 1998), and Picking Up the Pieces (2000). He was then chosen to play Herbert Sobel in the 2001 miniseries Band of Brothers.
