As many as 10 retired admirals were detained by the Erdogan government for expressing their concerns over the plan of developing a shipping canal in Istanbul comparable to the Panama or Suez canals. The retired admirals' detention came after over 100 of them signed an open letter that cited threat to the Montreux accord from the proposed canal. President Erdogan terms project Canal Istanbul as one of his "crazy projects".
