London landmark Big Ben fell silent for four years starting Monday, as desperately needed repairs are carried out on the 158-year-old timepiece. Londoners were not happy to hear the news. Hundreds of people stood in silence along Westminster Bridge and Parliament Square to observe the final bongs. Some lawmakers have criticised the lengthy silence, calling Big Ben an important symbol of British democracy.
