In the biggest ever restructuring of the political system in Hong Kong, the autonomous city's legislature gave its nod to new election rules that will further strengthen Beijing's authority over it. The new rules will bar those deemed insufficiently patriotic towards China from contesting elections. The rules will also reduce the voting power of the residents. United States was quick to criticise the move.
