In a major embarrassment for United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, his request to meet Pope Francis during his visit to Rome this week was denied by the Vatican. "The pope had already said clearly that political figures are not received in election periods. That is the reason,” Vatican diplomat Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin said. The Vatican also accused Pompeo of trying to use the move to attract US voters.
