Around 1,800 bulls were transported from Spain to Turkey aboard the Elbeik in late December. According to a Spanish government inquiry, the vessel failed to discharge its cargo, and the animals began to starve. Almost 10% of the bulls died, their bodies tossed overboard or left to rot in the cages with the others. Animal welfare activists believe that veterinarians should accompany all journeys, even if the journey is short.
