In a move that invited criticism from the allies of jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law that will bar members of "extremist" organisations from running for office. The new law will significantly affect some allies of Navalny who were campaigning to get a seat in the parliament. Under the law, the members or heads of groups declared extremist will be barred from running for seats.
