Sri Lanka needed a captain innings from Chandimal to save the team from sinking. The skipper was looking in good touch when Root, fielding on the slip position beside the wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow, tried to distract the batsman by shouting, “Come on Chandi, Throw Your Wicket Away.” Chandimal lived up to the expectations of Root as on the very next ball he played a reckless shot and gifted his wicket to the opposition.
