Serena Williams decided to withdraw from the Italian Open with a recurring left knee injury. The 23-time Grand Slam champion’s decision came a day after she thrashed Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson 6-4, 6-2 to set up a second-round meeting with sister Venus. Serena returned to the court after more than two months out with a knee problem and it would have been the final warm-up clay-court tournament before French Open.
