Roger Federer was handed a point penalty as he followed Djokovic to bow out of Shanghai Masters in a bad-tempered quarterfinals defeat to Alexander Zverev. The German secured a 6-3, 6-7 (7/9), 6-3 win as the Swiss legend was penalized after he hit the ball out of the court in anger twice. Federer had saved 5 match points to force a deciding set, but he then engaged in a continual war of words with the umpire.
