Carbon emissions from the moon have forced scientists rethink the theory that moon was created in a collision between Earth and a 'wandering planet' Theia. Readings from a Japanese spacecraft have spotted traces of carbon and volatile water in lunar gases, which suggest the moon is emitting carbon ions from its surface. It also suggests carbon has been present ever since moon’s formation 4.5 billion years ago.
