A new understanding of Earth’s deepest earthquakes might solve one of the most mysterious geophysical processes on our planet. Deep earthquakes, at least 300 kilometers below the surface, don't usually cause damage, but they can be widely felt. They can give us vital clues to understanding plate tectonics as scientists say the quakes often strike in ‘high strain’ areas where a sinking tectonic plate bends and folds.
