Scientists have found 977,000 shoes & 373,000 toothbrushes on the beaches of the tiny Cocos (Keeling) Islands, a group of 27 small atolls 2100 km west of Australia & found an estimated 414 million pieces of plastic weighing 238 tonnes. The study found the quantity of debris buried up to 10 cm beneath the beach was 26 times greater than the amount visible. The impact of debris on tourism is increasingly difficult to avoid.
