The Whatsapp Pegasus spying controversy has brought the government to the 'witness box' as several officials as well as civilians are asking questions related to privacy and data security. When the minister of state for home affairs G Kishan Reddy was asked about the matter he cited section 69 of the Information Technology Act, 2000 and said the government is "empowered to not only monitor digital communication but also intercept it.
