What is Mastodon, to which Twitter users are migrating

A mass chunk of Twitter users is migrating to an alternative social media platform called Mastodon. Twitter has been accused of being casteist and suspending accounts without any valid justification, by several users. Indian users contribute majorly to the user base of Mastodon. The newly popular platform was created in 2016 by a German coder named Eugen Rochko. It has been hosted on one server and controlled by a single entity.
