NASA was established in 1958 however its foundation was laid in 1946. Inspired by the arms race with the Soviet Union, the United States created the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics or NACA.

In 1958 the then-president Dwight Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act, establishing NASA. NASA became the new body of the 43-year-old NACA and absorbed it temporarily taking its roles and responsibilities.

This motivated project was launched in 1958 following the U.S.S.R. This had started what is popularly known as the Space Age with the successful launch of the satellite Explorer-1.

Because NASA is a highly exclusive body with many functions the administrator of NASA is nominated by the President of the United States. The administrator of NASA is obliged to report to the president. The first NASA administrator was Dr. T. Keith Glennan nominated by President Dwight Eisenhower. The present administrator is Mr. Charles Bolden.

The starting budget of NASA was 4.41% of the total federal US Budget. However, later the NASA budget declined to 1% of the federal budget. It currently is 0.48% of the federal budget.
