Tihar jail, which has been in the news recently for hosting the four convicts of the gruesome 2012 Nirbhaya gang-rape murder case, is the biggest prison of South Asia. The famous Tihar jail was established as the maximum-security prison by the State of Punjab in 1957. Other than acting as a prison for criminals, it is also famous for the rehabilitation of the inmates as on completing their sentence the prisoners can appear for the placements as well as higher studies. The rehabilitation program is not just for name as many of the prison inmates have successfully completed their studies in the past. In a remarkable feat, one of the inmates etched the rehabilitation program’s name in the history books by clearing the Indian Administrative Services exam.
The huge prison comprises of 9 central prisons, with a capacity to hold over 6,000 prisoners and is spread over a vast area of 400 acres. The prison has lodged several high-profile criminals like DMK MP Kanimozhi, Suresh Kalmadi, A Raja, Sanjay Chandra and others. In a unique step, the government started a project named Project Feel Like Jail, under which, one can go inside the prison and experience the prison life a price as low as Rs 500 a day. It was done to boost prison tourism.
There are several other things the Tihar Jail is famous for. The Tihar Jail’s boundary has India’s largest Mural over it. It was created as a part of the Delhi Street Art festival, co-founded by Hanif Kureshi. The jail has lodged some very infamous criminals like the assassins of former PM Indira Gandhi.
The cell also has special or VIP cells for lodging high-profile criminals. Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, who recently got out on bail, was also kept in the VIP cell of the jail.
