An encounter broke out between the city police and drug traffickers in Rio de Janeiro after drug traffickers held hostage a family. A mother was killed while shielding her three-year-old daughter from gunfire. The city witnessed a series of shootouts in the past 24 hours. Over 40 shots were exchanged between the police forces and the drug traffickers. The encounter started late Wednesday after the gang was spotted by local police.
