Civic bodies may face criminal charges in case of manual scavengers' deaths: Madras HC

The Madras High Court has warned the civic bodies of possible criminal proceedings against them in case of deaths due to manual scavenging. The state government has also been directed by the court to file a report comprising steps taken to prevent manual scavenging in every district of the city. The order was passed by the court in connection with a petition filed by the Safai Karamchari Andolan over the death of 14 people.
