According to a newly released report by UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres, the world is going to see a 7% decline in global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in 2020 due to the lockdown imposed in the wake of the novel coronavirus. When the pandemic was at its peak in April, the global emissions fell by 17% matching the 2006 levels. However, the CO2 emissions returned to within 5% below 2019 levels by June.
