French prosthetics maker Carmat sold its first artificial heart for implantation into an Italian patient awaiting a transplant. A team header by Dr. Ciro Maiello performed the operation at the Azienda Ospedaliera dei Colli hospital in Naples. Carmat was founded in 2008. According to a study conducted on 11 patients in November 2019, 73 percent survived for six months with the prosthetic. The operation costs over $177,000.
