Gujarat’s Gir Somnath district felt tremors of as many as 19 earthquakes of magnitudes in the range of 1.7 to 3.3 during the early hours of Monday. According to a senior official at the Gandhinagar-based Institute of Seismological Research, the phenomenon is called “monsoon-induced seismicity" and it is witnessed in a few areas of Gujarat’s Saurashtra region following a heavy rainfall for two to three months.
