A fossilized tooth of the largest ape ever lived has changed the earlier notion of ape evolution. Gigantopithecus blacki was said to be nearly three meters tall and weighed almost 600kg. Now, scientists have found molecular evidence from a 2-million-year-old fossil molar tooth in a Chinese cave. They believe the mystery ape is a distant relative of orangutans, with a common ancestor nearly 12 million years ago.
