Sri Lanka release nearly 3,000 from overcrowded prisons

2961 prisoners were released to ease the pressure at overcrowded prisons in Sri Lanka as the island nation steps up the efforts to stop the spread of the new coronavirus. Sri Lanka had imposed a countrywide curfew since March 20 while 5 people have died and the total number of positive cases related to the COVID-19 pandemic has jumped up to 166. Since March 17, close to 3000 prisoners have been released on bail.
