In 1995, the White Earthquake, a severe cold, wind, rain, and snowfall event, prompts the Chilean government to declare a state of emergency in the southern half of the nation.
Intense winds, cold, snowfall, and rain made up the climatic event known as "The White Earthquake," which struck southern Chile in August 1995. Due to the significant snowfall, 7,176 people were left alone, and three people died. Around 176,000 sheep were thought to have died by August 16 and 800,000 were in "critical condition." In addition to agriculture, the forestry industry was also shut down. Numerous vehicles, including two buses carrying passengers, were stranded in the snow along Chile Route 9.
