Why Gender Matters author Leonard Sax reports on a year-long study of elementary (primary school) students in the playground, where boys fight 20 times more than girls. The fighting wasn't always destructive, as the researchers discovered that after the fight, the boys were usually better friends. Sax observes that male primates have the same proclivity for fighting and hypothesises that aggression is a part of the male socialisation process. He claims that male primates who do not fight with other males when they are young grow up to be more violent as adults, not less.
