This meant the team had to get creative. Tommy Lee Wallace, who filled the roles of production designer, art director, location scout, and co-editor, was in charge of creating the mask for killer Michael Myers. To save time and money, he picked up a $1.98 mask of Captain Kirk from a shop on Hollywood Boulevard. The mask was based on the face of William Shatner. Shatner was playing Kirk at that time on Star Trek. Wallace widened the eye holes and spray-painted the mask white. This resulted in one of the scariest masks in horror history.
