Cassandra Morgan, his mother, was an archaeologist who hypothesised that Sir Francis Drake had heirs. Following his mother's death, Drake and Sam were placed in a Boston orphanage. After fleeing, they decided to alter their names, and they chose the surname "Drake" in honour of their mother.
