The paralysis of voluntary muscles is characteristic of REM sleep. REM atonia is a condition that prevents you from acting out your dreams while you are sleeping. Simply put, your body does not move because your motor neurons are not stimulated. While the sensation can be frightening, experts say it's perfectly normal and should only last a few minutes before normal muscle control returns.
